Communications Authority of Kenya has now penalized Homeboyz Radio station a fine of 1Million and given it a list of orders to be adhered to without fail.
This follows a series of events starting when three presenters of the station, DJ Joe Mfalme, Shaffie Weru and Neville caused an overwhelming public outrage with their slur comments against women during the station’s Break Fast Show.
During the show, the three presenters were debating on live air about one Eunice Wangari who was thrown off 12th floor and crippled in a purported date that went wrong. “Do you think Kenyan women are too available, are they too loose, too willing, too desperate and that’s why they get themselves caught up in such situations?” the debate went on.
On March 26 the radio terminated the services of the three presenters for two weeks but releases another statement a day later terminating their services.
Kenya’s Communication Authority has also suspended Break Fast Show for six months “until the station demonstrates compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements,” Mercy Wanjau, Communications Authority Director said in a Press Conference on Sunday.
The statement by CA director noted that it was unethical that the show publicly “exposed a victim of Gender Based Violence to ridicule and implied that it was the victim’s fault that she was targeted and assaulted,” and discussing sexual issues in and offensive and explicit manner hence glorifying violence against women.
The CA has ordered HomeBoyz Radio staff to undergo training on Programming code as well as a gender sensitization course certified by the National Gender and Equality Commission and file compliance evidence.
In addition, the station is required to apologize publicly through two nationwide newspapers and also air same apology during its prime time for the next five day.
